This past summer, you installed a fish pond 20 feet from your house. You want to install an outlet by the pond to plug in your lights, pump and a heater for the winter. You decide to come off of an existing GFI outlet on the outside of the house.

How deep should you bury the 12-2 uf type wire in the ground.

A) 6 inches

B) 12 inches

C) 18 inches

D) 24 inches

The answer is B. The item of interest here is that you are getting your power from a GFI protected outlet. The National Electric Code:

Table 300-5 Column 4 - (Residential Branch Circuits Rated 120 Volts or Less with GFCI Protection and Maximum Overcurrent Protection of 20 Amperes)

is where you would find the information regarding this question.

Because the wire was GFI protected, you may bury the wire only 12 inches deep.
If the wire was not GFI protected in the same situation, the burial depth should be 24 inches deep.
